This is Gloucestershire --
A JUDGE has sent a cancer sufferer to jail after hearing how he tried to blame his former partner for his crimes – even though she took him back to care for him
Christoff Joachim, 56, set fire to his Renault Clio, and defrauded the owners of the car, Motability, by saying by another person had torched it. And he bought another mobile phone to send threats to himself by text, Gloucester Crown Court was told yesterday.
Joachim, of Coopers Court, Church Street, Charlton Kings, was convicted of arson and fraud earlier this year.
"Jill Fishlock is a lady who struck me as a thoroughly decent and honest woman," said Judge Jamie Tabor.
"You ended that relationship and went with someone else as you were entitled to. You became ill and the lady you went off with ceased to be interested in you. Jill Fishlock had you back so she could look after you and you repaid her by subjecting her to the most objectionable form of harassment.
"It's almost unbelievable. You had two telephones and sent messages from one to another, giving the illusion you were under threat, you harassed her and you set your own vehicle on fire in order that she might fall under suspicion. That's how you repaid a lady who looked after you when you fell ill. What the source of your bitterness is I do not know but I do know she did not deserve it."
Judge Tabor shortened the sentence because Joachim has throat cancer. He was jailed for 12 months for arson, with no separate penalty for fraud, and one month for harassment to be served concurrently. Another two months' jail was imposed for wasting police time to be served consecutively, so the total sentence is 14 months.
After the hearing, PC Annabel Brittain said: "I am sorry Jill had to go through such an upsetting experience and glad this sentence should draw a line under it now."
Inspector Tim Waterhouse said: "This is how police will leave no stone unturned in a investigation. It should be reassuring to law-abiding people but serve to warn anyone tempted to give false information." Reported by This is 17 hours ago.
