CORONER Alan Crickmore has been charged with fraud and theft of more than £2 million.
The Gloucestershire official was first arrested by police in January 2011 after probe into the activities of his law firm.
He has been on bail since then while an investigation was carried out.
Alexa Collicott, a spokesman for the constabulary confirmed yesterday that the 56-year-old had now been charged with the offences.
Mr Crickmore, from East Approach Drive in Cheltenham, faces 12 counts of theft, seven counts of fraud by abuse of position and one count of fraud by false representation.
He was also arrested on suspicion of money laundering, but has not been charged with this offence.
The SRA closed down his offices, Alan C Crickmore Solicitor, based in Cheltenham's High Street on December 3, 2010.
His law firm specialised in family matters, liquor and public entertainment licensing, conveyancing, wills and probate.
A devout Catholic, he was also a director of the trust which runs the St Edward's independent school in Charlton Kings until his appointment was terminated in December 2011.
Miss Collicott said: "The charges follow the formal launch of a police investigation in January 2011 into matters under investigation by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA).
"The total amount of money alleged to have been stolen or defrauded is in excess of £2 million."
Mr Crickmore became deputy coroner for Gloucester in 1990 and took over as the city coroner in 2002. He later took on the role for the Cotswolds and became the first coroner to cover the whole of the county.
He was suspended from his position as coroner when investigations started and has not sat as county coroner since.
However, Mr Crickmore remains employed as the county coroner.
Since that time inquests have been conducted by his deputy, David Dooley, with the help of assistants.
Coroners are appointed on the basis of being either a barrister, solicitor or doctor.
Mr Crickmore, who has a cottage in Norfolk, has been practising law for 30 years and drove a personalised number plate Jaguar car.
