
Traffic in the city centre ground to a halt after the crash in Military Road at the junction with Sturry Road at 7.20am.
Fire crews were called to cut the roof off the car and rescue the trapped couple.
The driver a pensioner from Sturry, and his wife who was in the passenger seat, were taken to the Kings College Hospital in London with serious injuries.
The road was closed while emergency services dealt with the incident, and diversions were put in place.
It was the second crash affecting the city centre this week, after a motorcycle collided with a car in Lower Bridge Street on Wednesday afternoon.
